We had an exciting time with Grant Lottering at the Alpe d’Hues La Marmotte bicycle race this summer where he competed non-stop to raise money for the Laureus Foundation. He completed two and a half loops of this challenging race – a 174km track starting at Bourg d’Oisans and climbing the Col du Glandon, the Col du Telegraphe, the Col du Galibier and finishing with the Alpe d’Hues. The track consists of 21 one hairpins – making it one of the most difficult day races in Europe.
The renowned race takes place at the beginning of July every year. With over 8000 competitors, the race is on any road cyclist’s bucket list.
Grant attacked the race in difficult weather conditions: rain, snow, fog and freezing temperatures. On the summit of the Galibier, he unfortunately had to retire from the challenge after over 400 kilometers on his bicycle, suffering from hypothermia.
Grant will be back in the Alps in 2018 for another challenge to raise money for Laureus and FAST will be at the Alpe d’Hues, supporting him from the start to the finishing line.
FAST and Ekoi were at Ultra Durban, the Cape Argus and Ironman South Africa. We enjoyed meeting our Ekoi athletes: Kyle Buckingham, Suzie Cheetham, David Mac Namee and all of our other triathlete friends.
There was a fantastic atmosphere during January 2017 with a lot of snow, ski, sun and ultimately fun.
Our Capetonian guests enjoyed snow-boarding, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing and even an initiation into Biathlon – a discipline that involves Nordic skiing and precision in shooting. They showed off very good skills!
MTB at Les Saisies resort and in the French Alps, was another great experience for SA riders, uphill and uphill and quickly down hill. Beautiful alpine landscapes, facing Mont Blanc, and finish a 45 km day tour to Top of Col de Very in a small village at a pub to watch the arrival of a stage of the Tour de France.
Tour de France 2016, was as good as the previous ones and even better for the SA cyclists staying at Les Saisies resort with FAST. On 22 July the TDF went through Les Saisies village to pass the col des Saisies, after the impressive “ Montee de Bizanne”.
We could even ski that day, as the ESF, organise ski lessons for our FAST team and friends. The resort technical services had kept some snow under wood shaving since April, and it was fantastic moment to see people skiing as the riders of the Tour de France came in the village , in the middle of summer….
The day before 21 july we went to the finish of the Time Trial Sallanches Megeve and could enjoy to see each rider coming through.
And on 23 July all FAST guest get VIP entry to the Village of the Tour , and we all could enjoy to meet and talk the some of the riders, of course Louis Mientjie was the star of the day for us. Of course Peter Sagan, Chris Froom, Roamain Bardet also capture te attention of our cameras.
We will be there again in 2017, in the French Alps, so if you want to join us , we can organize a trip cycling, TDF, MTB visit www.fastactive.co.za or contact firstname.lastname@example.org
